Amethyst  is the common name for purple quartz.  It occurs naturally throughout the world in many locations, notably Minas Gerais, Brazil; Thunder Bay, Canada; and Vera Cruz, Mexico.  The ancient Greeks believed that amethyst would keep one from getting drunk.

Another beautiful sparkly natural amethyst crystal from Vera Cruz, Mexico measuring about 16mm in length and capped with sterling silver..  I'm not sure what the brown spot is in the photo, but it must be a reflection because it's not on the crystal.
