Quartz, Page 3: Badger Mine, Wisconsin
The majority of crystals from this location outside of the small town of Commonwealth, Wi. are
a light grey color and locally are refered to as smokey quartz. Actual gem quality smokey can be found here, but it's
pretty rare, and I did see one small gemmy amethyst that was found here on a feild trip with The Northwoods Geology Club.
The color comes from low-level radioactivity throughout the mine area.

Squat milky quartz crystal cluster from the Badger Mine in Commonwealth, Wi. on a matrix of iron ore. This
now closed iron mine was known for low level radioactive minerals that have produced some beautiful smokey quartz crystals.

There are several crystal-lined pockets scattered over the surface of these piece of iron ore form the western edge of
the Menominee Iron District, and there's a nice ovoid blob of hematite on one side of the specimen. Approx.
